Reason why I write: I write because I do not want ordinary lives to disappear unnoticed. Behind every face is a history, behind every struggle is a person, and behind every silence is often a story waiting to be heard. When I sit with someone’s experience and put it into words, I feel that I am preserving something that could easily be forgotten. I want the reader to see more than a problem, a statistic, or a difficult circumstance. I want them to see a human being—with memories, relationships, fears, dreams, and dignity. Perhaps that is why storytelling has become more than writing for me. It is a way of listening. It is a way of understanding people and the world around me. It allows me to ask questions that cannot always be answered in ordinary conversations: What shaped this person? What have they survived? What changed them? What can their experience teach someone else? Through these stories, I am learning that sometimes the most powerful stories are not found in extraordinary places, but in the quiet lives of ordinary people. I also write because I believe stories can change how we see one another. A story can take someone who was invisible and make them visible. It can turn an unfamiliar life into something a reader can relate to. It can create empathy where there was indifference and curiosity where there was judgment. So, perhaps I do not write merely to express my encounters. I write to remember. I write to listen. I write to preserve voices. I write to make people feel something. And, in my own small way, I write so that some of the lives I have encountered will not simply pass through this world without leaving a trace.

Bio:

I am Simon Nyeko, a Ugandan public health professional, storyteller, medical laboratory tech, and community-focused professional with a growing interest in health, people, technology, and social impact. My journey began in Medical Laboratory Technology and has continued into public health, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Applied Health with a focus on Public Health. Across these experiences, I have learned that health is not only about treating disease, but also about understanding people, their environments, and the circumstances that shape their lives. My professional and community experiences have taken me into spaces where I have worked with people on sexual and reproductive health, health education, disease prevention, community sensitization, and youth engagement. These encounters have strengthened my belief in the power of education, dignity, empathy, and meaningful human connection. I am particularly passionate about reaching communities and young people who may have limited access to information and opportunities, and about contributing to solutions that improve the well-being of individuals and communities. Beyond public health, storytelling has become an important part of who I am. Through my work with The GOAT PoL, I tell stories about people, their experiences, struggles, relationships, memories, and transformations. I write not simply to document what I encounter, but to preserve voices that might otherwise be forgotten. I believe that behind every statistic is a person, behind every challenge is a story, and behind every person is a life worthy of being seen, heard, and remembered. My journey continues to evolve at the intersection of public health, storytelling, technology, learning, and community service. I am constantly learning from the people I meet, the communities I serve, and the experiences I encounter. Ultimately, I hope my work can contribute to a generation that is better informed, more empathetic, and more willing to see the humanity behind every story. I study people, serve people, listen to people, and tell their stories and through those stories, I continue to discover the person I am becoming.
