On 3 May 2006, tragedy struck the city of Uvira when a young man named Owen lost his life after being stabbed during a violent confrontation. More than two decades later, important questions about what happened that day remain unanswered. Different accounts of the incident have emerged over the years, leaving Owen’s family, members of the community, and observers searching for the truth.

According to his family, Owen was a hardworking young man who had recently begun building a house and was working to improve his future. They described him as someone who was generous and willing to help others despite his financial responsibilities.

Little is publicly known about the man known only by the nickname “40.” No official explanation has ever been given for how he acquired that nickname or what his real name was. According to Owen’s family, however, he was someone Owen trusted and who played an important role in the events leading up to Owen’s death.

Public information about Marvin is also limited. The exact nature of his relationship with Owen has never been publicly established. According to reports, Marvin approached Owen on the Saturday before the incident and asked to borrow money. Despite his own financial commitments, Owen reportedly agreed to help him.

The following day, 3 May 2006, Owen was at home with his mother and sister when 40 telephoned him and asked him to accompany him somewhere. Owen initially remained at home, but 40 later called again and reportedly persuaded him to come outside by explaining that they only needed to stop briefly at Sonny Hotel to collect something.

According to the family’s account, when Owen and 40 arrived at Sonny Hotel, Marvin was already there.

Soon afterward, an argument reportedly broke out between Marvin and 40. The reason for the dispute has never been publicly explained. During the confrontation, reports indicate that 40 suffered a stab wound to his hand.

According to early reports, Owen attempted to intervene to calm the situation and prevent further violence. He then reportedly tried to help 40 reach a vehicle so that he could receive medical treatment.

It was during this period that the situation allegedly became fatal. According to some accounts, two unidentified men restrained Owen while Marvin stabbed him from behind with a sharp object. Owen collapsed after suffering the wound.

According to Owen’s family, 40 later telephoned Owen’s sister and informed her that Owen had been stabbed. She rushed to the scene and reportedly found her brother lying in a pool of blood. She attempted to take him to several hospitals before he was eventually pronounced dead.

Following the incident, police arrested 40 and two other men who were accused of involvement in the attack. They were later released. Authorities reportedly stated that they hoped 40 would assist them in locating Marvin, who remained the primary suspect.

The decision to release the three men angered Owen’s family. They questioned why the man who had repeatedly called Owen out of the house and accompanied him to Sonny Hotel had been released. Some family members believe Owen may have been deliberately lured into a trap. Others questioned whether the money Marvin had borrowed from Owen shortly before the incident could have been connected to the attack. These suspicions have not been publicly confirmed by investigators.

The incident may have been connected to alleged cult-related activities. It was also claimed that Owen was stabbed while attempting to flee and did not die immediately after the attack. The same accounts reported fears of retaliation within the community. These claims have not been publicly confirmed by official authorities.

Following Owen’s death, reports also emerged that angry youths allegedly burned down Marvin’s house after learning that he was being accused of the killing.

As of the latest publicly available reports, Marvin remained on the run while the police continued to search for him.

Although many details of the case have been reported, several important questions remain unanswered. Why was Marvin already at Sonny Hotel? What caused the argument between Marvin and 40? Why did 40 repeatedly encourage Owen to leave home that day? Was Owen an innocent bystander attempting to stop a fight, or was he deliberately targeted? Was there any connection between money Marvin had borrowed from Owen and the attack? Why were 40 and the other arrested men released? These questions continue to shape public discussion of one of Uvira’s most enduring unsolved cases.

More than two decades later, Owen’s family continues to seek justice and hopes that one day the full truth about what happened on 3 May 2006 will finally be established.
